Celebrating 10 Years and 1 Million Downloads of Spinward Fringe With a Summer Sale
I didn't think I'd get the chance to write this blog post when I set out on this journey. I started writing Spinward Fringe as a fun Space Opera adventure that I wanted to see but couldn't find. Science Fiction television shows were ending and being cancelled: Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, Universe, and Farscape were all either over or ending. Battlestar Galactica (Ronald D. Moore's reboot), ended in lacklustre fashion and the spinoff, Caprica, failed to live up to fans' hopes. Star Wars was hibernating for the most part, Star Trek was back in reruns and I'm pretty sure I'd seen everything at least five to ten times, and newcomers like Firefly didn't last.
It was a dark time for SciFi, and it wasn't the first time in my life when the force was weak with the serialized, space bound science fiction adventure sub-genre. Instead of weeping in front of more reruns or seeking out obscure box sets of more obscure series, I decided to try writing my own with the purpose of entertaining myself.
I wrote fantasy before that along with a little horror but took a couple years off after my first self publishing adventure in 2004. In 2008, starting on new years' eve, I dug into a Space Opera idea that I had been daydreaming about for a year. That became the First Light Chronicles, which was eventually collected into one volume and renamed Spinward Fringe Broadcast 0: Origins.
I released it in eBook form on a site made by a company in France called Mobipocket, unaware that Amazon already bought the company and was using the tech to develop the now dominant Kindle platform. A year later, I was firmly making a living and spreading my books out to Amazon, Smashwords and other retailers.
It's with gratitude and a little disbelief that I look back at the decade that followed. I've written and published twenty-two novels in that time, twenty-one of which can still be downloaded. Last year I verified that over a million copies of my books were downloaded legally with at least six times that number pirated (that's a gross underestimation).
Granted, many of those legally downloaded copies were free, but it's still a number I wouldn't have dreamed of hitting when I started out in 2004 with my first in-print self published novel, then started writing and releasing SciFi in eBook format.
Starting today, I'm celebrating ten years of successful self publishing. In that time that's all I've been doing to earn my living, and to kick it off I'm participating in the Smashwords Summer sale. All my books are on sale or free there now, and I invite you to take a look, leave comments on your favourite books, maybe follow me there as a favourite author if you like and be a part of it because they have been a part of my success. Here's a direct link to my page there.
I'm also having a poster made and updating most of the formatting for all my books while I correct errors throughout the series. The updates will be free for everyone, available through your dashboards wherever you purchased or downloaded them.
I'm wondering if you have any other ideas to celebrate this anniversary. Please, leave them in the comments, but don't forget the Smashwords Summer Sale, especially if you missed Highshield, Brightwill, Dark Arts, Spinward Fringe Broadcasts 6.5 or 10.5.
Thank you very much for reading and buying my books through the years. I hope I can do this for the rest of my life. I love creating this kind of entertainment, first for myself, then for you!

Highshield Release Day!
Since I was a young teenager I wanted to write an epic fantasy novel. I wrote several unpublished books leading up to 2004's Fate Cycle Book I, and while I did see that as being worth publishing at the time, I would later become dissatisfied with the story I created there.
Brightwill was an attempt to tell a big story in a shorter book, one that suggested that the story could continue at the end, but had a whole tale told between those two covers. I'm still pretty happy with that novel, and am happy to offer it for free. In fact, the book that's released today, Highshield, takes place several years before Brightwill, and has some connective tissue with that book. There's even a cameo or two.
This year, I couldn't hold the ideas I had for an epic fantasy novel in anymore, I was working on something else, a much anticipated novel, but kept on getting distracted. So, I sat down and wrote Highshield. It's the beginning of a saga that I'll continue whether it sells 40 copies or 400,000 copies. It features character types I've never explored before, a world I've been dreaming about for twenty years or more, and the right story to start things off. A complete story.
The central story in this novel revolves around three special children, some of whom need to be transported across a politically divided land. They're all resurrected, and they all have a God or Goddess backing them from afar, trusting that their mortal followers will get the job done. That's what it's really about, spiritual, personal and physical journeys across a landscape.
The rough draft of Highshield was published twice weekly on my Patreon page, but this release is different. It's been edited multiple times, new sections have been written, other sections have been re-written, and there's a Guide to the people, and places in the book along with some extra history. This release is very special to me.
I hope you enjoy it while I'm busy working on Spinward Fringe, which will start putting releases out as early as next month. Watch this space this Sunday for more news on that.
For now, here's where you can find Highshield:
Smashwords
Amazon (Paperback is also available here)
Apple iBooks
Barnes & Noble
Kobo
Many other book stores are carrying it as well. If your library supports Ebooks, they may be able to order it in for you for a discounted price. Thank you to the people who support me no matter what I'm writing, this is becoming a great year thanks to you.

Change Is Coming...
Before I get into the news I have I must say thank you to everyone who bought any of my books or put one of my free books in front of a new reader one the last few months. The first half of the year is generally the hardest time financially, but I'm keeping my head above water thanks to you.
Now, about that title...
My Patreon Page Will Be Launching Soon
In a couple weeks the new place to get all your news and a lot of content from yours truly will be a Patreon page. Most of the content there will be available for free, so not much will be changing. There definitely will be something extra for most contributors though, but I don't plan on starting with a lot of tiers, I think keeping things simple at the start is the best move. Why Patreon? I hate to admit it, but I need something to help stabilize my income throughout the year, and if there are enough contributors I'll also have more freedom to work on more projects and complete more books. I also wanted a new portal to offer other projects through.
A New Book!
I've already finished a large chunk of a brand new fantasy novel that takes place in the world of Brightwill, and I like the look of it so far. I will probably have to put it aside for a while as I concentrate on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge, but expect to see a lot about this Epic Fantasy Novel this year.
Spinward Fringe, Dark Arts and More
I'm keeping my goals simple for this year: Two Spinward Fringe novels are due, along with the sequel to Dark Arts. I want to finish more books this year, but I'm only going to promise what I'm pretty sure I can finish. I expect to have Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge out in June, 2017.
Podcasts Will Return
I have two podcast series planned, and they'll be announced on the Patreon Page. Both will be freely available, one will have a finite, limited number the other will be unlimited. A few have already been recorded.
Other Projects
Work on a role playing game (system and settings), continues. A playable set of basic rules will be flying out of my printer today and initial testing is set to begin. I'm also involved in a couple projects from other artists, so you never know what will appear.
The Facebook Page and Twitter
Randolph Lalonde and the Spinward Fringe Crew will still be a main community hub for everyone who wants to join, and I'll be pasting links to all new content there so you can see what's going on. I'll be doing the same with Twitter, even though that's not nearly as active for me. The addition of a Patreon page won't really complicate this, in fact, it should give everyone more free content than you've been used to seeing from me, and it'll make getting that content out to you much easier.
New Book Store?
That's right, I'm working with a vendor to create a clean, easier to use signed book store. It'll be accessible through the Patreon Page, but I'd like to remind everyone that the shipping costs from Canada are still high because I don't live in a major city.
I know, there aren't a lot of final links or finished projects in this update, but there's a lot of work happening in the background. I think you'll be faced with some very pleasant surprises from me this year. Thank you for keeping my career afloat by talking about my work and buying the books, I hope you've enjoyed the ride so far!

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge and That Other Project
Work has already begun on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge. Right now I'm going through the previous novels in the series, combing through them for details that I need for Broadcasts 11 and 12.
Firmly connecting Broadcasts 11 and 12 to the rest of the books is also incredibly important, especially since the war in these books is heating up, and this promises to be a turning point in the series.
I apologize for not posting on this blog more often. I normally keep in touch with everyone through the Facebook group, which you can find here. I promise to post on this site more often though, since it is the oldest point of contact and source of Spinward Fringe news.
While I backtrack and review the previous Spinward Fringe books, I'm writing another project that I can't talk about yet, but it'll be announced sometime in March. It's a short project that I can squeeze in while I'm in Broadcast 11's research phase, and I know some of you are going to love it.
So, you can look forward to the completion of several projects in 2017, and I can't wait to unveil each one of them for you.
More to come...

More! A Progress Update
Spinward Fringe, Dark Arts, Brightwill, and now the Chaos Core Series share parts of an ever-shrinking year.
I'm extremely fortunate as a writer not just because I make enough money to live on, but because my books receive increasingly positive reviews that most often end with; "now I just want to read more!" or "Where's the next one?"
While some people may see that as criticism, I see it as an invitation. The reviewers have paid for my work, read it and want another. That's an open door if I've ever seen one.
The good news is that I have ideas for all four of these titles, I even have ideas that are pretty much whole book outlines. The bad news is that it takes time to write, edit and get these to retailers, time which is absolutely finite. We're half way through the year now (roughly) and I've only managed to release one novella while I continue to work on Broadcast 10. Sure, there are at least two more books coming this year, but I know I'm not going to make my deadlines for Broadcasts 11 and 12 in 2016. There's still a chance Broadcast 11 will come out this year, but since I don't have any of that written yet, I can't make guarantees.
Looking over the history of this blog, I see a pattern. In January and February I always make some grand plans about how many books I'll be able to finish. Then, around June or July, I write a post about how I'm modifying my expectations and may make it through one or two books instead. This pattern comes up over and over, and I think I've finally learned my lesson. So, on to the good news and the annual adjustment of expectations...
In this year I can promise that Broadcast 10 will be released and it's going to be a large book with more than one story within. Broadcast 10 is really like two novels and a novella that are strung along one timeline and then trapped together in one book, that's one of the main reasons why Spinward Fringe novels take longer to write, but I know Broadcast 10 will be finished sooner rather than later.
Another Chaos Core novella called Cool Pursuit will be released this year, that's for sure. It's easier to write these shorter novellas with simpler story telling, so I can write Broadcast 10 and those at the same time for a while. Not forever, my brain needs some time to formulate new ideas, but for a few more weeks. Cool Pursuit will be in your faces sometime in 2016.
The Dark Arts sequel will make it's appearance this Halloween, or at least, I'm going to try my hardest to get that done. This isn't a guarantee. The first Dark Arts novel started with a simple plan, it was only going to be seven chapters, and then it got extremely complicated for a while before I got the story back under control. That's the tendency with these books, I'm sure, so who knows if I'll hit my deadline?
Regardless of whether or not I meet the deadline for Dark Arts II to come out at the end of October, I will be working on Broadcast 11 by the end of the year, probably at the beginning or end of September. Broadcast 11 will take less time to write than 10 because it will be a simpler novel that follows fewer characters and it won't be as long. In fact, I hope the days of writing long 140,000+ word novels are over for me for a few years because I find it's much more fun to write shorter works, and my finances take a massive hit if I don't release a book at least every six months.
In 2017 I'll be ready to write the second Brightwill novel, Broadcast 12 and another Chaos Core novella. the Brightwill and Chaos Core series' may end after three to four books each, that's the plan as it stands now. I would like to finish the Chaos Core series in 2017, and write another Dark Arts novel in addition to what I've already listed, but I'll have to see how it goes.
Overall, I'm really excited about the new, achievable plan, because I'll be bringing you more stuff overall, and I'll be writing different genres throughout the year. A quick recap is in order!
Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground will come out this year (2016).
Cool Pursuit (Chaos Core Book 2) will also come out this year (2016).
Dark Arts II may come out this year if I finish the final draft in time for an October release.
Work on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11 will start this year (2016).
If all goes well, more books will be released this year, but I believe I'll be busy enough with those aforementioned projects.
2017 looks like more Spinward Fringe, Brightwill, Chaos Core and maybe more Dark Arts.
I love writing this stuff, and I enjoy presenting it to you more than you know, so I truly want the same thing you want: more. What thrills me to no end is bringing you more and being able to make sure that it's more of the good stuff, not just another one like the last one, so that's what I concentrate on.

Brightwill, a land razed by war, on the verge of utter destruction. There are few strongholds left, and few leaders who have the vision and the power to protect their people.
Naze Kinu, the Great Wizard provides a stronghold for the most talented young and old people in the lands. The Amber Refuge is his life’s work, a central stronghold built by his comrades, his power and his reputation.
That is why, when he tells his long time aide, Doril, that he intends to tell all about his secret sibling, Riv. His intentions are met with alarm. Naze kept his relation to Riv a secret for half a century.
Riv, known in legend as the Slasher Gremlin, the Prince
Slayer, and the thief of the Enduring Light.
Despite the damage his revelation could do to his reputation,
Naze is set on telling the true story of his brother, of the days
that inspired the legend. Most of those close to him are left
to wonder why, and to listen as their leader regales them with the tale of his misadventures with his brother and Oroza, the dragonling.
This is the story of Naze and the brother he can no longer deny this is the story of Brightwill in times of drastic change.

Brightwill is #2 on the Top 50 Indie Books Worth Reading List!
Thanks to your nominations, then your votes in the last round, Brightwill has been raised to unheard of heights. #2 is a win for me, it will bring a large number of bargain hunting readers to the Brightwill novel, and a sizeable portion of them will join us on the Spinward Fringe journey.
The kind of support my first publicly available fantasy novel has gotten is staggering, and there is another coming in 2016. I have two other books to finish in 2015, but I'm looking forward to returning to Brightwill next year for more fun fantasy adventure.
Thank you very much for your votes, it isn't every day that a new book is elevated so quickly.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10 Release Date Announcement
The response to Spinward Fringe Broadcast 9: Warpath has been solid, with just over seven hundred preorders in the first ten days. That may not be New York Times Best Seller big, but it's a fantastic start by my standards.
Work on Broadcast 9: Warpath is almost complete, and there's great news - it's longer than expected by about ten percent or more. As I've said before, I've been enjoying the work on Broadcast 9 so much, that I don't want to stop writing. So I won't.
After Spinward Fringe Broadcast 9: Warpath is complete, I'll be taking a short break to finish work on another novel called Dark Arts, which has been a project I've touched on and off for several years, starting in 2009. It's time to finish that. Most of the work is already done.
After that, I'll be getting to work on finishing Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10, which will take us into the middle of a war. I deeply enjoy writing this series, and I have to write Broadcast 10 before turning towards the next Brightwill novel.
With the work I've already completed on Broadcast 10 in mind, and the plan already on the board, I'm comfortable announcing that the release date for Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10 will be December 14th, 2015. Yes, that's right, it's going to be late this year.
A preview chapter, or chapters for Broadcast 10 will appear in Broadcast 9: Warpath, so you'll have some idea what you'll be getting yourself into.
I'm eager to get the story that many of you have been waiting for, the war the Spinward Fringe series has been headed for, in front of you, and I'm excited that most of my year will be spent writing this series.
I'l be working on Brightwill II early in 2016, then I'll be back to work on another Spinward Fringe Novel, and possibly another Dark Arts novella after that. It looks like I've got my schedule all set until 2017, that is, if you're still reading.
Thank you for all your support so far, I hope to provide you with many hours of entertainment in the coming months, and the coming years.

Thanks to everyone who voted for Brightwill during the nomination round. It has made the short list for top Indie Fantasy Novel on Read Freely (Readfree.ly), one of the leading websites featuring free and inexpensive indie fiction. I enjoyed writing this book as much as any Spinward Fringe book, and have high hopes that more people will read it now that it's free everywhere. A sequel is expected early next year.
Now, I'd like to ask you for a little more support if you enjoyed Brightwill (or enjoy it after downloading it for free from Amazon, the iBookstore, Barnes & Noble, for Kobo, Smashwords, or many other sites where it's been made available). If you want to see this book rise to number one, you only need to vote by clicking this link and filling out the short three question form where you vote for the book, enter your nickname, and your email address.
I thank you for your support thus far, I sometimes forget that I'm not the only one who enjoys my writing, and thank you for any support you offer in the future. This is a very exciting time for an author who has never won anything with his work.

Brightwill II Is Coming...
Work on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 9 is going very well, and there's more real news on that coming next week. This week I'm happy to bring other news to the table.
Great news for everyone who loved the first Brightwill novel: Work started on developing a second and a third book set in the same universe, featuring many of the same characters about three months ago.
What does this mean specifically? Well, right now I'm finishing "test chapters" wherein I try writing a good opening chapter and another chapter where the featured character begins telling a story, much like in the first Brightwill.
While that's being done, I'm figuring out what Brightwill II is about, specifically, what the ending is, and roughly how the story will go, beat by beat. These plans sometimes change a lot during the actual writing of the book, sometimes they only change a little, but it's important to have a frame to hang a novel on.
I expect all this work will be finished in a couple weeks, then I'll be able to actually start writing the text of the novel - the really fun part - when I'm not working on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 9.
Why is there going to be a sequel? Well, I fell in love with these characters. Much like with Spinward Fringe, the characters are drawing me back into the world of Brightwill, and they have stories to tell. I'm certainly not doing it for the money, because the first Brightwill is not very popular and it just didn't sell well. I'm happy that it's free now so a few people have little to lose if they want to give it a try. It's also easier to point friends to Brightwill so they can give it a try for free.
I'm keeping Brightwill II short, and only writing it in my spare time, when I'm not focusing on Spinward Fringe, because I love both universes.
I'm proud of both universes, and taking time in each of them is a great deal of fun. I hope to have another Brightwill novel out sometime this summer along with a Spinward Fringe novel.

Brightwill Is Free Forever
Before I get to the central news item of this blog post, I have to write that work on Broadcast 9 is coming along very nicely. I can’t promise that it will be the longest book in the series, but I’m liking what I have so far. I'm very excited about Broadcast 9 and the future of Spinward Fringe.
Now, on to the matter of the title. Brightwill is my first foray back into fantasy after years of writing science fiction. Fantasy is a genre I wrote many novels in before Spinward Fringe. None of those old, formative works will be published, or re-published. They were the books I made mistakes in, penned during my teens, and twenties, when I was still learning how to tell a good story. I’m still learning, any story teller must continue learning from the stories they tell, the world around them, and whatever else comes along.
The first novels I wrote, the ones that shall forever remain in the closet, led me to Spinward Fringe, and to Brightwill, which is the best fantasy novel I’ve written. I believe in the book, and I know I’ve learned a great deal from writing it as well, things that will help with Spinward Fringe and other projects in the future. I can’t emphasise how proud of Brightwill I am though, and I’m happy that I finally have a fantasy novel out there that I’m pleased with.
Fantasy is a tough genre to get noticed in, even though I have Spinward Fringe out there. I’m surprised at how little crossover there is between science fiction and fantasy readers, I’ve run into countless people who read one or the other, and almost never read both. One one hand I'm surprised, on the other, I'm glad I can offer something to both sides of that coin.
In the spirit of getting Brightwill in front of as many people as possible, I’m going to put it out there for free. Not just for a week, or a special weekend, or with the use of a coupon code, but forever, just like I did with Origins years ago.
There is another reason why I’m making it free, and I know there are people hoping for this….
Once I finish work on my next two projects, I’ll be diving into writing another Brightwill novel. I will be getting started on that sometime this year. It will be set in the same world, and I’ll be writing a test chapter when I have time, approaching the beginning of this book in a new way. That’s all I can tell you so far.
With my focus on Spinward Fringe for the time being, you shouldn’t expect much from Brightwill for a few months, but there will be previews from Broadcast 9 coming soon, so there will be stuff popping up here before you know it.
Until bits of the new Brightwill novel surface, you can go download, or tell people about my free work, with now includes Origins and Brightwill. The reach of Brightwill has not been long, it's not a very successful book in terms of sales, but the positive feedback I've gotten is near overwhelming, much like the response to later Spinward Fringe books.
I’d like to say a special thank you to everyone who bought copies of Brightwill, I hope you loved it, and I really appreciate your support.

Brightwill Is Now Available In EBook Form!
I had a great time writing this book, and I can't wait to share it with everyone. The short novel was an experiment in writing that I can say I enjoyed from beginning to end, and I hope you agree.
Here's the synopsis!
Brightwill, a land razed by war, on the verge of utter destruction.
There are few strongholds left, and few leaders who have the
vision and the power to protect their people.
Naze Kinu, the Great Wizard provides a bastion for the most
talented young and old people in the lands. The Amber Refuge is
his life’s work, a central stronghold built by his comrades, his
power and his reputation.
That is why, when he tells his long time aide, Doril, that he intends to
tell all about his secret sibling, Riv, his intentions are met with
alarm. Naze’s twin was his best kept secret for good reason.
Riv, known in legend as the Slasher Gremlin, the Prince
Slayer, and the thief of the Enduring Light.
Despite the damage his revelation could do to his reputation,
Naze is set on telling the true story of his brother, of the days
that inspired the legend. Most of those close to him are left
to wonder why, and to listen as their leader regales them with
the tale of his misadventures with his brother and Oroza, the
dragonling.
This is the story of Naze and the brother he can no longer deny
this is the story of Brightwill in times of drastic change.
The printed version is on the way, due later this month, but the EBook edition was released on November 7, and it is now available for free anywhere quality Ebooks are sold.
Here are the vendors I'm aware of so far:
Amazon
iBookstore (Apple)
Smashwords
KOBO
Barnes & Noble
Free samples should be available at all these stores as well, so you can try before you buy. I hope you enjoy it!

EBook Preorders Are Now Open For Brightwill!
As if writing the book wasn't enough fun on it's own, I get to share it with everyone with a taste for fantasy fiction. I dreamt of writing this short novel for over four years, and the writing portion of the journey was fantastic. With my cousin, Luke Alberon, staying at my place for this summer, he got to read the pages as I completed them, and I got nearly instantaneous feedback from someone who is fairly choosy with his entertainment.
Then the editing chain began, and everyone involved with that seemed pleased, with surprisingly few notes to offer, so the writing of this book has gone so well. Now I can't wait to get it in front of you.
Even though my distribution partners advise that I should put this up for Pre-Order for six weeks, I'm not going to delay, because the book is finished, after all, and you should be able to read it as soon as everyone has started listing it. That's going to be in about seven days.
So, you can preorder as soon as the EBook is available at your favourite seller until November the 7th, when the book should be available pretty much everywhere. You can also read previews of the novel wherever it's being sold. Here are the links:
