Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge Is Out Now! #1 Science Fiction Release On iBooks!

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge is now available everywhere quality EBooks are sold!

Writing this book was one of the greatest challenges of my life, creatively and otherwise. At over 140,000 words and 70 chapters, it is one of the longest Spinward Fringe books with major plot, character and setting development. Old storylines are revisited, some of them are tied into one or two new ones, and a few scenes that I've been dreaming about for years are in here.

I've already taken a week off after finishing this novel, and I'm starting work on the beginning of Broadcast 12, which matches the tension of Broadcast 11, something that will characterize the next novel: tension and a trip along the edge of disaster.

I didn't finish this book long ago, so I don't have a balanced opinion of it, but so far I'm proud of Broadcast 11. As with every book I release, there are minor errors here and there, some of which have already been fixed, some will not be addressed for a long time, but they're small and few. We put a lot of effort into editing this book, and I truly hope it shows, but we don't have time or money to go through it ten or more times like most major publishers do, or to filter it through dozens of beta readers like some authors do. At the moment, I have to move on to Chaos Core 3 (which is under way right now on Patreon), and Broadcast 12 so there isn't much time to look back.

I am so happy this book is available now, there are secrets that were truly hard to keep for the time it took to write this book. I hope you enjoy it!

Spinward Fringe Continues: Alice's Revenge!

Months ago, when I realized that Broadcast 11: Revenge wouldn't be out for a while, I started sharing Alice's story from that book. It's gone well, and Patreon Subscribers have even contributed opinions that helped me fine-tune the direction of the story.

It's been months, and Broadcast 11: Revenge is nearing completion, and Alice's story from the book looms large on the Patreon site. There is a release date and a book coming soon, but until then, you can check over 15 chapters out for free or subscribe to see over 25 chapters detailing Alice's journey through the book.

Her story takes up roughly half of the books' content, and the version you'll be reading is early draft so there will be changes that will come when the book is published in its final form. If you think you would enjoy reading her story individually in an early format, then again with the book, I invite you to read along with over a hundred others on the Patreon site. If not, then maybe you should wait; it won't be long now!

Thank you very much for your patience, the Spinward Fringe story is still alive and well!

Spinward Fringe Continues and Big Things Are Happening On Patreon

Part 12 of the Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge preview is up, and it's starting to feel like the novel is being serialized, when it's really only half-ish of the book. It's not terribly hard to ignore by just avoiding Patreon for a while or to limit (by reading the free stuff only), but it's still wroth a discussion.
This book is still being written, and it's the most difficult Spinward Fringe novel to date, but also the most rewarding. It's taking a LONG TIME compared to my other work, but not long compared to novels of it's type: Particularly the type of novel with three strong, novel length stories within. I don't feel bad for how long it's taking, and I'm thankful to everyone who has stuck around.
The importance of this novel to the series has come up in spades in the chapter available to people who subscribe to my Patreon page. Today they're getting a chance to comment on a chapter before it's finalized and perhaps change the course of the series with their opinions. I expect good things, to be honest, and I'm proud of where the series is going right now, but I want to hear more opinions.
Here's the link to the Index, where everyone who is following the free chapters that are released every Saturday will find Part 12, and subscribers (who get 2 chapters a week), can find Part 17.

Much more to come this month, so stick around, friends!

Spinward Fringe Continues With The Broadcast 11: Revenge Preview!

Despite a few issues that were caused by yours truly, Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10.5: Carnie's Tale is a success. Sure, it didn't chart high, but over a thousand of you downloaded it and the reviews are largely positive. Thank you so much.

A few typos and minor errors weren't caught before it was uploaded, so an update addressing those will be posted next month, you can update for free wherever you bought the book.

Right now I'm working on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge, which is due out at the end of February. That doesn't mean that you have to wait that long to read it though. Chapters are already being posted on my Patreon page. Every Saturday a free chapter will appear, with subscribers getting a bonus chapter every Wednesday. We're following Alice's journey through the novel until it comes out. For the sake of Patreon, I'm calling the serialized preview Alice's Revenge. You can find the Index here.

Spinward Fringe and everyone who loves it has kept the roof over my head for nearly ten years now, and as we approach the tenth anniversary of the series, I'm going to concentrate on delivering more content in that universe. I'm constantly tempted to work on other projects, and in 2017 I gave in, finishing a lot of work on two role playing games before completing the first part of an epic fantasy series I've been imagining for over twenty years, Highshield.

Rounding out the year, I decided to develop characters and settings that I knew I wouldn't have room for in Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge. Many of the chapters in Carnie's Tale were cut from Broadcast 11 because they wandered too far from the main story, and wouldn't have seen the light of day if it weren't for this side project. I'm proud of what that turned into, and I'm glad to see people like it in general.

So, that brings us to the main point, and the next two Spinward Fringe Broadcasts, Revenge and Invasion. The development of these novels has now taken over two years, and over twenty chapters have been written then cut (including content that reappeared in Carnie's Tale and in a short story on the Patreon page), representing some disappointing false starts but good ideas that led in the wrong direction for Broadcast 11. There are great stories waiting to be told in these books and the one that will follow Invasion, but digging down to them has taken longer than anticipated. Now, I believe I've got an outline I'm happy with for Broadcast 11 and Broadcast 12 is in great shape too. It's all I'm working on, and for the tenth anniversary of Spinward Fringe it's all I want to work on. I want to celebrate 2018 by moving the story forward in meaningful, exciting ways, and by wrapping up storylines before moving on to a new era in the Spinward Fringe universe that will see a crossover with Chaos Core and much more.

So, until my holiday and afterwards I'll be working on Broadcasts 11 and 12, and you can get a great big piece already.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10.5: Carnie's Tale is out!

The final title of this book tells you exactly where it fits into the saga. I know many people have preordered this already by a different name, and you don't have to worry. This is the same book, but due to a few difficulties, this, the final version had to be released.

Carnie's Tale follows Alice as she explores Noah Lucas' past on a treacherous planet where machines are out to kill the humans and the people are just as untrustworthy. Noah is currently a member of Minh-Chu's Samurai Squadron, where he's known as Carnie.

After this story started to come out on the Patreon page, several people started asking if it would be released as a book of it's own. After looking over the story I had, I realized that with a little work, I could expand it into a full novel and write an important precursor story to Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge.

Carnie's Tale quickly became an important book in the series, developing Alice, her surroundings, and especially the title character: Carnie. I truly enjoy the story in this book. It's some of my best work, so I hope you enjoy it as well.

I'm busy at work on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge. Finishing Carnie's Tale helped me sort a few problems I had with Broadcast 11 out, and the whole series will be better going forward thanks to it's completion.

Carnie's Tale Is Everywhere

Chapter 30 of Carnie's Tale is up and chapter 15 is free! 15 is the last chapter available to non-subscribers, but the whole book is out, so you can download it to your reader from your favourite retailer now.

Chapter 29 did go up on Wednesday as scheduled, but there was no announcement since I was putting out a dumpster fire of my own making at the time (Sorry about that to all affected. If you preordered and still have a problem, update your book using Amazon's dashboard).

Other than an issue with Amazon, the launch for Carnie's Tale went really well. Thanks to a few positive reviews, people who were hesitant to check the book out are picking it up this week. I'm just glad I got things fixed in time for Thanksgiving in the US, since most of the emails I'm receiving now are from people who are thanking me for releasing something in time for their long trips to visit family.

Thank you for supporting this book, I hope everyone enjoys it!

What I'm Listening To For Carnie's Tale

The story from Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground continues for Alice and a few other characters in Carnie's Tale, a short novel that takes place between Broadcasts 10 and 11.

Often there's a time jump between books in this series, and that was the plan for Broadcasts 10 and 11, but I found a story between the two. It's a story that takes us back to a world that at some times feels abandoned, after the Holocaust Virus hit and artificial intelligences turned on most of humanity.

There were survivors who were smart enough to lay low, and some of them made it to Haven Shore. Noah Lucas (known as Carnie in the Samurai Squadron), is just such a survivor.

As with every book I write, I associate different songs, and often albums with the events and the environment I'm writing about. For Carnie's Tale, that music is sometimes slow, low, and it speaks of lonely times, silence that is too complete, and a wish to return to better days.

There is also boisterous carnival-ready music for when Carnie is reliving a few memories about better times, and other tracks that speak to Alice's time in training, or her moments of disappointment and joy.

Here's a list of some of the tunes I've been playing in the background while writing this story, I've tried to give you some clue as to what kind of scenes I used as background music while I was writing:

For Carnie's lonely times: Leonard Cohen: Everybody Knows, Waiting for the Miracle,

The first android chase: Lost Boys Soundtrack: To the Shock Of Miss Louise

Alice's New Home: Conjure One: Endless Dream

A chase into the storm: Helion Prime: Life Finds A Way, Hailstorm: Mayhem, Dragonforce: Ashes of the Dawn

A new chase: Apocalyptica: Toreador II

A little longing: Black Eyed Peas: Meet Me Half Way

Alice Goes On A Search: Ray Charles: Somewhere Over the Rainbow

The people we miss: Apocalyptica: Faraway Volume II

I'm not quite finished with Carnie's Story yet, so I'm sure this sampling of music will grow. I'm seriously excited to get this story into your hands, there is a lot of heart, and I think it's the perfect bridge between Broadcasts 10 and 11.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge Expands With A New Novella

Approximately one month passes between Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground and Broadcast 11: Revenge. During that month Alice is still in the Haven Fleet Academy Apex Program, and there was one story that didn't fit in Broadcast 10 that I wanted to finish. It fits right into the middle of Alice's training course, and it easily connects Spinward Fringe Broadcasts 10 and 11.

Alice is given a complex and secretive assignment: she is to review months worth of voice recordings, video and pictures taken by Noah Lucas, better known as Carnie, a member of the Samurai Squadron. The material was recorded while he was on Iora, a technically advanced world as the holocaust virus struck it. She is to review all materials and create a report that includes insights into the young pilot's personality, strategic information about Iora and any other details that could help Haven Fleet. Before long, Alice becomes personally invested in the plight of her subject, and makes discoveries that could change her forever.

Meanwhile, a permanent government is taking hold in Haven Shore, and the Fleet is undergoing one last shakeup that could break the Apex class apart. All the while Alice is left to wonder where her father and his ship, the Revenge have gone while they wait for the rest of their active fleet to return from the Iron Head Nebula.

The Spinward Fringe saga continues in Carnie's Tale, the connective tissue between Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground and Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge, telling Alice's story between those books from a more personal perspective.

As a side note, this story is written for adaptation into a 2 episode television script, so if you ever wondered what a special pair of Spinward Fringe episodes would look like after several seasons, this is a good chance to do that. I'll be writing more of these stories in the future, as the Spinward Fringe series has flirted with television adaptation more than once and I have many ideas for shorter books that have been waiting for years.

Carnie's Tale will be released on October 28, 2017 and is available for preorder now from:

Amazon US, Amazon UK, Amazon Australia, Amazon CA, and all other Amazon regional sites.
Apple iBookstore
Barnes & Noble
Kobo
Smashwords
...and several other ebook retailers.

Thank you so much for your support this year, I can't wait to get this story into your hands!

Highshield Chapter 30 (The Fairy Tale Version) Is Up!

Highshield Chapter 30 is up! There are two different versions of this chapter, and this is the first of the two, the Fairy Tale version. I'll be posting the other version tomorrow or Friday, then looking to you to choose which version makes it into the final revision of the book.

[For everyone who is waiting for news on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge, it's coming. I'm still well ahead of my goal to have this book out within a year of the release of the last, so please be patient.]

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge Begins

You can read chapter 1 of Broadcast 11: Revenge right now on the Patreon page. In a few weeks, Spinward Fringe will take over the whole page, and new chapters will be released regularly at least until the book is released in its whole, final edit form.

It's taken a lot longer than I expected to get to this point, but I'm happy with the work I'm doing, so I hope you enjoy this dramatic part of the Spinward Fringe saga.

Tabletop Role Playing Game Development Continues

Last week I finished writing the first section of the fantasy novel I've been working, but before switching back to Spinward Fringe full time, I thought I'd take another look at the role playing game I started designing last year.

For everyone who doesn't know, a Table Top Role Playing Game involves pencil and paper, character sheets you can hold in your hand, and a variety of dice (I love dice...). It's a game where a Game Master guides a group of players through an adventure she or he has written in advance.

In a fantasy Tabletop RPG, players may assume the role of a fighter, a wizard, a ranger or rogue (there are a lot of other character types, those are the most common). They make characters, filling out character sheets and then assume the roles like actors who don't get out of their seats often.

I spent over 20 years as a game master, and have created a few custom game systems before. Creating a new system from scratch is a lot of fun for me because it's a huge challenge. It has to be different enough from the other role playing games out there, and it has to be a great system on its own to be worthwhile. Role playing systems also have a tendency to become extremely complicated, and that's one thing I'm resisting, making the system harder to put together.

This role playing system is being designed to adapt to the world of Brightwill (Fantasy), Dark Arts (current day Supernatural), and Spinward Fringe (Space Opera / Science Fiction Adventure).

When I finish the core rules I'll be releasing them for free in a copyrighted book. By Saturday I'll have enough of the basics finished so a player can create a character and be ready to play in less than an hour. I'm really excited to continue development on this, and It'll keep going even as I turn most of my attention towards finishing Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge.

I'll also be launching my basic Patreaon site next week, and I'm working to get copies of my books in hand so I can offer signed copies by the end of the month. There was a delay because Amazon isn't offering authors the option of ordering bulk copies for a discount, so I'll be using another company to get copies soon(ish).

I'm so excited about Patreon, it'll give me one place where I can unveil a lot of things this year, and I hope it'll open up more opportunities to entertain you.

Change Is Coming...

Before I get into the news I have I must say thank you to everyone who bought any of my books or put one of my free books in front of a new reader one the last few months. The first half of the year is generally the hardest time financially, but I'm keeping my head above water thanks to  you.

Now, about that title...

My Patreon Page Will Be Launching Soon
In a couple weeks the new place to get all your news and a lot of content from yours truly will be a Patreon page. Most of the content there will be available for free, so not much will be changing. There definitely will be something extra for most contributors though, but I don't plan on starting with a lot of tiers, I think keeping things simple at the start is the best move. Why Patreon? I hate to admit it, but I need something to help stabilize my income throughout the year, and if there are enough contributors I'll also have more freedom to work on more projects and complete more books. I also wanted a new portal to offer other projects through.

A New Book!
I've already finished a large chunk of a brand new fantasy novel that takes place in the world of Brightwill, and I like the look of it so far. I will probably have to put it aside for a while as I concentrate on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge, but expect to see a lot about this Epic Fantasy Novel this year.

Spinward Fringe, Dark Arts and More
I'm keeping my goals simple for this year: Two Spinward Fringe novels are due, along with the sequel to Dark Arts. I want to finish more books this year, but I'm only going to promise what I'm pretty sure I can finish. I expect to have Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge out in June, 2017.

Podcasts Will Return
I have two podcast series planned, and they'll be announced on the Patreon Page. Both will be freely available, one will have a finite, limited number the other will be unlimited. A few have already been recorded.

Other Projects
Work on a role playing game (system and settings), continues. A playable set of basic rules will be flying out of my printer today and initial testing is set to begin. I'm also involved in a couple projects from other artists, so you never know what will appear.

The Facebook Page and Twitter
Randolph Lalonde and the Spinward Fringe Crew will still be a main community hub for everyone who wants to join, and I'll be pasting links to all new content there so you can see what's going on. I'll be doing the same with Twitter, even though that's not nearly as active for me. The addition of a Patreon page won't really complicate this, in fact, it should give everyone more free content than you've been used to seeing from me, and it'll make getting that content out to you much easier.

New Book Store?
That's right, I'm working with a vendor to create a clean, easier to use signed book store. It'll be accessible through the Patreon Page, but I'd like to remind everyone that the shipping costs from Canada are still high because I don't live in a major city.

I know, there aren't a lot of final links or finished projects in this update, but there's a lot of work happening in the background. I think you'll be faced with some very pleasant surprises from me this  year. Thank you for keeping my career afloat by talking about my work and buying the books, I hope you've enjoyed the ride so far!

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge and That Other Project

Work has already begun on Spinward Fringe Broadcast 11: Revenge. Right now I'm going through the previous novels in the series, combing through them for details that I need for Broadcasts 11 and 12.
Firmly connecting Broadcasts 11 and 12 to the rest of the books is also incredibly important, especially since the war in these books is heating up, and this promises to be a turning point in the series.

I apologize for not posting on this blog more often. I normally keep in touch with everyone through the Facebook group, which you can find here. I promise to post on this site more often though, since it is the oldest point of contact and source of Spinward Fringe news.

While I backtrack and review the previous Spinward Fringe books, I'm writing another project that I can't talk about yet, but it'll be announced sometime in March. It's a short project that I can squeeze in while I'm in Broadcast 11's research phase, and I know some of you are going to love it.

So, you can look forward to the completion of several projects in 2017, and I can't wait to unveil each one of them for you.

More to come...

Cool Pursuit Is Available! Broadcast 10 Is Coming!

The files for Cool Pursuit: Chaos Core Book 2 were provided early to Amazon and Smashwords in order to get it into everyone's hands by October 21. As a result, most retailers already have it, with the exception of Barnes & Noble who tends to be much slower than all the others.

For anyone who doesn't know, this is the follow up to the first book in the Chaos Core series, which started with Trapped, a free novella. (You can get that for free anywhere eBooks are sold).

Chaos Core 2: Cool Pursuit is much larger, and shows us a larger piece of the Spinward Fringe universe as the main characters make their way through troubled territory.

Here's where you can get your hands on Cool Pursuit: Chaos Core Book 2:

Amazon.com
Amazon.co.uk
Amazon.ca
Amazon.com.au

Smashwords
iBookstore
Kobo
Barnes & Noble

Now that this book is completed and released, I'm devoting all my time to Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10. It's already the size of an average Space Opera novel, about 95,000 words, but there's a lot of writing to be done. My goal is to get it out for December 7, and to be working on Broadcast 11 by the time that is in your hands.

I'm more excited than I can express to be so close to finishing broadcast 10, I believe it's one of the best in the series, and it's been the most difficult to write because so much is expected of this novel. If you look to the upper right hand corner of this blog, you'll find several preview chapters. If you've already gone through those, I highly recommend checking out the Chaos Core books, Dark Arts or Brightwill. Most of those books are free, so what do you have to lose?

Thank you so much for your support, I hope you enjoy the books that are finally being released!

Spinward Fringe: Big Duality in Broadcasts 10-12

Writing every novel is a different journey. While every Spinward Fringe novel has similarities to others in the series, I can remember how each book felt to write. No two felt the same. Every novel was its own journey.

There are no spoilers in this post for anyone who has read Spinward Fringe Broadcast 9: Warpath.

Good, now that the non-spoiler announcement is there, I can keep writing this post. Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground is a journey on two simultaneous paths.

Alice has entered an Advanced Officer Training Program with Triton Fleet. The learning curve is steep, made even more difficult because she's tying to discover who she is without framework technology and the limitations it placed on her. So far, writing this journey has been a pleasure, and I'm almost finished the portion that will appear in Freeground. So far I've written forty days of her journey into and inside the program, and I'm happy with it so far.

The other side of this book happens light years away in the Iron Head Nebula, where the Triton and Revenge attempt to assist Freeground as it tries to leave the nebula and survive the space beyond. There are no guarantees as the Order of Eden are in hot pursuit, using an entire fleet of ships to search the nebula and watch its borders. This is the side of the book I'm about to start writing.

What's interesting about the writing of this book is that it is a small part of the Order War which will run as the main story of several books. Alice's training is not completed in Broadcast 10, but the feeling from test readers is that her journey is interesting because the reader is learning with her (but only the really fun and interesting stuff). All the while, there is a war going on, and her class is keenly aware that they are going to have their chance to serve in the new Triton Fleet.

Meanwhile, the Revenge has to cope with a crew that has little experience on the ship, and the stakes couldn't be higher. I feel the next few books you'll have a chance to read are the ones you've been looking forward to all this time. I love what I did with Warpath, and the reception couldn't be better, but for everyone who has been reading or will start reading the whole series, the upcoming books are the culmination of the ten behind them. Now is the time to get off the fence if you've been holding off on reading Broadcast 0: Origins, because I feel like I"m tossing doubloons into the pot of gold at the other end every day.

While every book was a different journey in the writing, I would say that I enjoyed every one, and I'll enjoy revisiting all the books again next year.

Improving the Spinward Fringe Series Going Forward

Mondays should only be for good news, so that's all  you'll find here. If you haven't read Broadcast 9, there are some things that won't make much sense at the moment, but you'll get there. There are NO spoilers ahead, so don't worry.

My plan for 2016 originally was to write two Spinward Fringe novels, a Spinward Fringe side novel and a short about Carnie, a pilot who who was featured in Broadcast 9. I also scheduled time to write a novel outside of Spinward Fringe, and that hasn't changed.

What has changed is that I'm already tightening up the story for Spinward Fringe. The short featuring Carnie is being written right now, because it's become a part of Broadcast 10. It's going to really improve a section of that book that (according to two local test readers) was already pretty good.

The other Spinward Fringe side novel I had planned also fits in with the events of the main story, so, instead of finishing two Spinward Fringe novels and a side novel, I'm going to finish three Spinward Fringe novels and another book outside of the Spinward Fringe universe - it may be Brightwill, it could be Dark Arts, I'm not sure yet.

All of the upcoming books are entered around the nine sector war, and we'll get to see the universe as it is after the holocaust virus in a very direct way. I'm very excited about this phase of the Spinward Fringe saga.

So, the Spinward Fringe series gets less confusing today, you'll be getting bigger, better books and more of them!

Now, back to work on Broadcast 10, I'm almost a quarter of the way through it at this point. The January 28, 2016 release date is written in stone at this point, I'll definitely hit it.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground Will Be Delayed

This is a larger book than I anticipated. My initial goal was to plan and write a book that came in at around 100,000 words in approximately 30 days.

While I know I can still make the word count goal, I am sure that once I reach it the book will not be complete. That means there will be no way for me to publish this novel on December 21, 2015.

I need time to write a novel that will probably come in at 150,000 words minimum. This is an important book in this story, so I'd also like to slow down a little and take the time to do more planning so the final story is more refined and enjoyable.

Another important factor in all this is editing. The last book went out without a final check because it was rushed out, so there are errors that will be corrected this December or sooner. Thankfully Broadcast 9 is a much loved volume in the series, but it still deserved a little more time. I don't want the same thing to happen with Broadcast 10, so giving myself some more time to do editing is really important. Backtracking, correcting errors in previous books slows work on new books and other projects down.

I'll be honest, I really wanted Broadcast 10 out right before or right after the new Star Wars movie, but rushing things will only result in an inferior work, so that's not going to happen.

So, what kind of delay are we looking at?

I expect to have a very good, longer version of Broadcast 10: Freeground out on January 28, 2016.

The good news is that work on Broadcast 11: Revolution will already be underway by the time Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground is out, and both books will be much longer than originally planned. Both books tell the story of our favourite characters in a time of absolute war, and will offer the kind of stories I've been looking forward to telling for years.

I am sorry that things are going to be delayed, but the results will be so much better this way
