Broadcast 7 Update - Brace Yourself

It takes years to write a good novel. I released many of my previous works before they were ready. As a result I've been subject to well deserved, and not well deserved criticism alike.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework marks the end of a 1,150,000 word journey, and I need this to be the best book in the series, the most enjoyable to write, and the most enjoyable to read.

These days I'm inundated by people who don't realize, or refuse to acknowledge that it takes years to write a good novel. The comments section of this blog was assaulted by sixteen people just today.

To them, I say: Suck it up, buttercup. If you're still interested in reading Broadcast 7 when it comes out, fantastic. If not, that's fine with me. I wonder how you'd feel if I sent scathing emails several times a week to your job asking; "ARE YOU FINISHED YET?!?!" Your bitching won't make me write faster.

Every single one of your comments has been junked, you won't see them on this or any of my other blogs.

To the people who have been kind and patient all this time, I owe my gratitude and it's for those people I produce a podcast with the help of a few fantastic friends. I feel sympathy for those folks, as I announce that the book will be late, because they are exactly the kind of reader a writer wants to entertain for life.

I am happy that I released the Expendable Few, which was a result of working on Broadcast 7 - there were stories there that wouldn't fit in that book, so I put them in context and voila, Expendable Few.

Now, to the core of the matter:

I'm not going to make the August 14th, 2012 date, it's just not possible. The story is too big, the novel is large. It is the book that ends the Spinward Fringe series in its current form. There will be other Spinward Fringe novels - Broadcasts 8 and 9 are in development as I write 7, but so much of what I've been writing about for the last 880,000 or so words comes to a close in Broadcast 7. The best update I can give is that I'm writing every day, and I enjoy what I'm doing.

Keep in mind, I want to finish this book too.

It's just taking longer, see the apology above.

I have some of the greatest readers on the planet, and I hope you stick around for the end, it's going to be everything I wanted it to be.

RL

Even with a wait, it is still amazing! and as for the complainers I say good for you! stand your ground! my family owns family business and we deal with the same B.S.

Thanks for the hard work and taking the time to make sure it comes out as perfect as possible! Can't wait for it!

Randy,

Thanks for the update. As you know, we read your work for the quality, not the quantity, or the celerity for that matter. As I said before Captain, and I think I speak for the rest of the crew, you keep writing and we'll keep reading.

I am reminded of what epic games used to answer to all questions about releases: when it's done. As long as you don't have to rush it for economical reasons - don't.

I came across Broadcast 0 entirely by accident, I then proceeded to read all of the rest in under a month, I couldn't get enough! I can't wait to read the last book, I love this story!

Good luck with the writing, I know it takes time and talent to write such a story. I will be here waiting for the grand finale!!!!

I have just finished all of your spinward fringe novels and have to say I have enjoyed them very very much. It is so easy to get caught up in the lives of these characters and you keep it exciting all the way thru them all.
As for those people who hassle you refer them to my sons bumper sticker: All I See Is Stupid People!
It takes time to write, it doesn't just get published the way it comes out. It has to be edited then edited then edited then edited till you are comepletely happy then guess what? It gets edited by someone else! Yep, it takes time.
Take your time on book 7 I KNOW it will be a good one and I am very happy you will have more books coming out in the future, if they are half as good as these then you will have a follower in me.
You take care and God Bless All You And Yours! Sandra

Hey Randy,
When your ready to release broadcast 7 I will be here waiting. As the old saying goes " when it's done it's done and not before" I don't care how long it takes the anticipation of waiting on a series you really love and enjoy is all part of the fun. The added bonus of the podcasts is fantastic. I so look forward to them, and the laughs I have while listening is greatly appreciated. How many authors take the time to answer readers comments "live". None, that I know off. Plus you keep us updated here and on facebook. So thank you for all that you do for us readers and the great please you give us in all your hard work.

Best wishes

I am happy to wait until you're happy with the finished product. I have had so many happy hours reading the story to this point, that I'm just grateful that you choose to share you talent with the rest of us. As long as you keep writing, I'll keep reading!

Cheers, Rissa

Thank you for taking the time you want and need to both take care of yourself, and to make Broadcast 7 great. As I've said b4: I will always read what you write. You are very gifted, and I appreciate you sharing your universe with us.

I would rather wait for the finished article, than have you rush it and spoil the ending. Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for all your hard work. I would rather you take the time you feel you need than rush something. The kids with attention span problems are probably not the fans you wanted anyway.

Randy, I LOVE the series and the podcast (I subscribed so I won't miss any). Thank you for all the many hours of enjoyable reading. I had to put myself on a Spinward Fringe diet -- only so much reading at a time -- that way I can savor the stories and make them last. Keep up the great work and I'll be happily, patiently waiting for Broadcast 7 and Beyond!

You have to be firm with us... Tell people to READ SLOWER!!!
No complaints from me I will wait as long as it takes.

I'm cool, your cool it's all cool. Thanks Randy, do it in your own time. I need more time for rebroadcasting anyways.

We "heart" you Randolph! Unfortunatly we live in a "immediate gratification" society so some people can not understand why it takes years to write a book, heck I read Stephen Donaldson's "White gold Bearer" series and he literally takes 2-3 years between books. But you know what, it is always worth it! I am really enjoying your sci-fi series, one of the best around in my opinion (and yours is the one I keep comming back to). Take as long as you need, I will just fill my time re-reading what you have written so far and I hope you are happy living the dream of writing fulltime :)

These books are definately worth the wait thanks for writing some of the most engrossing books I have ever read Randolph You are the man!

Bohicaotter said...

For those of you waiting for broadcast 7, give Peter F Hamilton a try. His Nights Dawn Trilogy is pretty good and it will keep you busy until Book Seven. Be sure and get the "Confederation Handbook"{ as it explains a lot about a very complicated Sci Fi Space Opera. That way you can leave Randolph alone to finish 7.

Pdaviesoz said...

Looking forward to it. Cannot guess where it'll go next. For those struggling, try John Ringo's "Live Free or Die" on the Baen website.

Sully said...

Can't believe someone would have the audacity to complain about the wait time between novels. I personally check in regularly to see if "7" is out yet but would rather read a solid well written book months from now than a thrown together one that met a deadline today. The reality is I'm going to read it in a couple of days and than have to find something else to read anyway. Enjoy the process my friend. Looking forward to it when it's ready.

I've lost so many hours sleep recently getting through all the other books in a couple of weeks it will almost be good not to have the next one for a bit and catch up on some zzzzz's. Looking forward to it though.

Dear Mr Wordsmith :)

Where to begin!?! Remarkable story telling with splendid writing! Culminating in one of the most epic sci-fi journeys...

Love it!!! Take all the time you need... kick out another perfect diamond... rest a bit...

...then, please please please write more! Not just for me and everyone I recommend the series to, but for our childrens children :) leaving a great legacy, an all time sci-fi classic!

Boooo!!! to all the people nagging for the book! yes, i get the shakes too but its coming! chill out :x

Thanks for the good reads :)

Thank you for the update!! I have to say as anxious as I am to read the next novel, I can wait a bit longer and just re-read them all again a couple of times. The updates are well appreciated. I have immensely enjoyed your work and hope it continues for as long as you have the inspiration and desire. Thanks again and hope it goes well.

A very grateful fan,
Ryan

Please remain true to yourself...thank-you for the great novels you have created thus far. Looking forward to the future "works" yet to be presented.. remember you are creating master pieces from yourself not from others..

Thank you for such wonderful books in this series. I have been reading them for the bast week and a half and just finished BC 6 moments ago! Thisbis the first series or sci-FI books that has caught and held my attention since the series "Dragon Riders of Pern". I am awaiting BC 7 and know it will be awseome. I truly can't wait to see what happens with little Zoe!, Larry, Ashley, and Patrizia! Love the book and keep them coming!

It doesn't matter how long it takes, be it weeks or months, you simply cannot rush art. I've read and re-read the first 6 broadcasts, and I've recently finished the Expendable Few, while I've waited for the release of Broadcast 7 I've read a few other 'space opera' series and I have to say none of them come close to Spinward Fringe in anyway shape or form

I'm complaining!… Just kidding Captain! Take your time. I might be going nuts waiting, but I know it's worth it. The longer it takes, the better it will be.

I was thinking that the time must be getting near, so I went and started re-reading from the beginning, just so I can refresh everything for the next installment. I just finished "Origins", and stopped in for an update. Glad to see you're still mostly on schedule, and I eagerly await B7.
Thanks for TEF, it was a delicious little appetizer, and thanks for holding out for quality over speed. Although I hate the wait as much as anyone, I am convinced it will be worth it. Keep hammering away, and know that as long as I'm still alive when it drops, I'll be buying it.

I just finished Broadcast 6 this morning, so fortunately my wait for 7 won't be too long. I've enjoyed the series immensely and am always happy to support self-published authors.

I'm just popping in to say thank you for reading and supporting my work! I appreciate the positivity here more than you could know.

There's a pretty good update on the progress of Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework here - http://crewcastradio.com/2012/07/28/crewcast-radio-broadcast-10-the-first-one-with-broadcast-7/

...and wonder of wonders, it's a podcast episode! If you haven't heard the podcast already, this episode is as good a place to start as any.

Thanks again, I hope this info helps!

I'm willing to wait as long as it takes, at the end of the day Spinward Fringe has been the corner stone of my reading since I found the series (purely by happy accident). So here's to you RL, I can't wait to read the rest.

I was thinking about how things that are made over a long time becomes something that's really great.

Take for example a game known to be one of the best freeware games of all time: Cave Story. It was made over the course of 4 years, the developer polishing the mechanics till it felt just right. Not many games now a day get that amount of attention.

In the same way, it's true that once Randolph is doing something that he's interested in and gets time to do it, it's gonna be awesome.

Bruce said...

I am willing to wait for a good story. I understand some people can be frustrated with the wait, I am even frustrated at times but it lasts only a moment.
Expendable Few was entertaining and a tease, it really brought me back to the Spinward trilogy, I am again waiting for Broadcast 7, but in the meantime. For those who just can't wait any longer... a suggestion, read a book, it will fill in the time

Anonymous said...

Ill just pass the time reading the spinward fringe series several times over :) it'll be fun.

Hi

I'm not even going to try and say that how eagerly and impatiently I'm waiting for broadcast 7 and how disappointed I was when RR suggested that he will miss the august date, having said that, perfection cannot be RUSHED and I'm cool with that (now). The book will finish when it finishes and we all won't be any wiser or older till then, so Mr Lalonde Sir, hats off to you for doing a great job so far and I firmly believe that upcoming books will be nothing short of jaw dropping finesse and perfect storyline (as always) so here's to you Mr Lalonde. Keep up the good work.

Kind regards

Rehan.
