That Geek Podcast Episode 6: The Return Of The Geeks

angelmuppetWe catch up wish Sylvie, Stephanie and Randy as they recover from the various ailments that kept us away from our microphones for so long. We start by talking about what we plugged in to while we were immobilised, and move on to some big news in Geekdom that we missed such as…

The Blu-Ray version of Season 1 and 2 of Star Trek The Next Generation, Sherlock BBC season 2 on Blu-Ray and Netflix, The Young Indiana Jones and why you should get your set NOW if you want one.

We take positive and negative sides of the issue and discuss good and bad points of one of the biggest franchises of all time being bought by the largest children entertainment company in history.

Other side-topics include: Geriatric Indiana Jones, errors in Star Wars past (including the 'Han Shot First' issue), ET, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), I Dark Overlord, and much more…

So many, in fact, that we'll do another Q&A about Broadcast 7 if we get a few more.

MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't read Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework, then you're going to want to skip this episode entirely. We take the gloves off and get right into the details.

A Few Thoughts On Broadcast 7 & The Future

I apologize for the rash of late podcasts. Stephanie, Sylvie and I are taking turns getting sick, and we've all been very busy when we're not ill. It's nothing serious, just enough to keep us off the air for a while. That's why I'm not doing my Spinward Fringe Podcast tonight, I'm crushed under a heavy sinus cold. I'm hoping it doesn't last.

You're not going to walk away from this blog post with nothing though, I'll be happy to talk about Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework a little.

So, Framework has been out for twelve days, and it's officially a best selling EBook, reaching number one on Smashwords side-wide (not including XXX, erotica). The book made it to 19th place in the Science Fiction charts on Amazon.com, fourth on Amazon.co.uk, and put me in 12th place in the Science fiction author list on Amazon. Overall, Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework is averaging 4.5 stars out of 5 in reviews across the Internet.

I can only say thank you to everyone who bought, reviewed and hopefully enjoyed this novel. This release has been a great experience, and I hope to release a new book soon.

For the book I knew it was, these results are fantastic. I was aware that Broadcast 7 would be a controversial book, and for two people who loved it, there are two who are still digesting their experience, and one that simply disliked it. Broadcast 7 is a complex novel, and it took two attempts to get it ready to publish. I wrote the whole thing twice, and it took almost three years. The process also produced a side novel called the Expendable few, which features a story I just couldn't weave into Broadcast 7. There was no way to make that fit. Writing that extra novel did give me a chance to explore a differnet style as well, which is something I enjoyed and don't regret.

Everything in Broadcast 7 was carefully considered, especially the parts that survived the first draft. The Victory Machine story, the first flight of the Warlord and a third of the ending all survived from one draft to the next. Those parts were re-written and edited anyway, which made them fit with the rest of the book. The concepts driving this book were the same from one iteration to the next, that never changed. The theme of reunion, which is core to the third and final act in this book was new, it wsa what made the ending woorth reading as far as I'm concerned.

I'm actually glad Broadcast 7 is controversial. No novel of lsating significance is without controversy, and this book had a difficult mission statement. I had to reveal the motivations of several characters, and bring about the end of those stories while leaving an indellable mark on the series that suited the gravity of the story lines that were wrapped up. Why make sure that closing storylines had a lasting impression?

The series goes on, that's why.

In one of my first ever blog posts years ago, I said I'd write the Spinward Fringe series as long as 1) I had stories to tell in that universe, and 2) as long as there was an interest.

Through the sale results above and the way Broadcast 7 finally manifested, I know there's a demand and many stories yet. What kind of stories? Spinward Fringe is a series that can accomodate drama, action and especially adventure. I find that the drama statement is proven in Broadcast 7 more than in any other book in the series. I'm proud of that, but my true love in writing is adventure.

When one of the main characters in act 3 of Broadcast 7 asks Jason if adventure lies in her future, that was very much me asking myself what the next part of the series would look like. He had to tell her that, yes, there would absolutely be adventure. That's where Broadcast 8 is going, back to real adventure writing. My characters have their causes, they have a fresh chapter in their backstories thanks to Broadcast 7, and they have complex relationships that will either carry them through the challenges ahead or drag them back.

Broadcast 8 is the next book I'm working on, and I'm planning it with broadcast 9 and 10 so the three will all have an interesting interconnectivity, and so they can all be a lot of fun to write and read. I've already written an entire plan for Broadcsats 8 and 9, which I consider to be a lot like a bulletin point draft. I've found a way to scrap a lot of what simply doesn't have to be in there and keep all the interesting and fun bits, so I've already saved myself a whole heap of time.

I get giddy when I plan for these three books, that's why I'm putting the other writing I had planned off. I'm just too excited about Spinward Fringe.

When will you see Broadcast 8? I'll tell you when I have some idea, but it might be sooner than you think.

Again, thank you so much for a spectacular book release.

That release is ongoing, with Broadcast 7 on its way to Barnes & Noble, the iBookstore, Kobo and other outlets. If you simply cannot wait, you can get a copy of the book for any device by purchasing it through Smashwords here.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework Is Here!

I'm excited to announce that Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework has arrived at Amazon across the globe, and on Smashwords. Other EBook retailers may have it as early as this weekend.

It took over two and a half years to write this book because it ties up so many story lines. It's also a new style of story telling for the Spinward Fringe series that I had to switch to because there is so much going on. I believe that I accomplished my goal and am free to write more in the Spinward Fringe series, continuing with Broadcasts 8, 9 and 10.

A lot of things end in this book, questions that have been lingering since Broadcast 0: Origins and after are addressed, and the Expendable Few ties in as well.

I hope everyone enjoys the read, and I thank you for your support!

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework Release Date

Due to technical difficulties and scheduling issues, the Spinward Fringe podcast will be very late. A new episode may not be available until as late as Wednesday the 21st, 2012.

On the brighter side, I'm proud to announce the release date of Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework.

On November 21, 2012, Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework will be available on Smashwords. It will appear on Amazon through Kindle later that day or early the next (the delay is thanks to Amazon's submission system). Over the following days the book will appear at the iBookstore, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and other EBook retailers.

Print copies will be available shortly afterwards through Amazon (unsigned), and the Home Store (signed - see the link on the right hand side of this blog).

I enjoyed writing this, the most difficult Spinward Fringe book, and I hope it meets your expectations. This book is filled with character development, and concludes several plot lines that have run for a long time now.

In this book I reveal most of the secrets I've been keeping for over four years, and I'm finally pleased with the way they've been presented. Through story and character development, a large part of the Spinward Fringe universe has finally been realised. It's my pleasure to invite you into this part of the story, the universe, and to experience these characters again.

I thank everyone who has supported me so far by buying the books and spreading the word. I am truly grateful to everyone who is joining me for this part of the story.

RL

[If you've never heard of Spinward Fringe, you can check the first book out for FREE through Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, the Kobo, or the iBookstore.]

[There was a side novel released between Spinward Fringe Broadcast 6: Fragments and Broadcast 7: Framework called The Expendable Few, you can find it on Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, or in the iBookstore.]

That Geek Podcast Episode 5: The 2012 National Novel Writing Month Special

Stephanie, Sylvie and Randy talk about NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). We explain what it is, what it's like to write 50,000 words in a month, and, since all three of us are veterans of the event, we impart some helpful advice.

For a basic tour of NaNoWrimo, the events, where to go to sign up, and a few interesting insights into a writer's brain, this is a great episode.

So far, Sylvie is behind in her word count, and Randy is joining the "Oh Shit Brigade" off with a bang by joining NaNoWriMo on the 15th of November, half way in to the event. That's a promise to write 50,000 words in the second half of the month. We'll get an update on his  and everyone else's progress next episode!

Spinward Fringe Broadcasts 5 and 6 Now In Print

When Broadcast 7 becomes available, there will be two paperback editions. One will include Broadcasts 5, 6 and 7 together, the other will be a separate, stand alone book.

In preparation for that, I've finished work on releasing Broadcasts 5 and 6 in their own paperback editions through Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. These aren't signed editions. I'll have signed copies available sometime late next week.

Here are the links to the unsigned versions of Broadcasts 5 and 6 on Amazon.

The EBook version of Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework will be released as quickly as possible, but it will still take longer to finish the EBook than it will to make the print versions available.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: We Have A Final Draft!

My editor and I still have editing work to do, but yesterday, I completed the final draft of Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework.

That means the story in this novel is complete, and all the necessary scenes are written. The ending of the book caps off the series in a way I find satisfying, in some ways, most of the book is made up of mini-endings that pop up throughout.

A lot of what you'll find between the covers will be unexpected, and I'm fairly proud of that. After two and a half years, scrapping one draft entirely, and re-writing, I'm happier than I can say that I have something I can call complete and final.

Here's some extra info on the book:
181,388 Words (Almost as long as The Fellowship Of The Ring).
56 Chapters
Will be available in print, then in eBook form.
Editing is expected to take two weeks, and it began months ago while writing was under way.
This book brings the series to a total word count of over 1,069,500 words.

I'm afraid there won't be a preview of Spinward Fringe Broadcast 8 at the end of Broadcast 7, because I'm developing Spinward Fringe Broadcasts 8, 9, and 10 together. They will be smaller books, that's all I can say about that for now.

Once we're almost finished editing, I'll submit to my eBook formatting partners for a work date to find out when they can format the book. After I have that date, I'll be able to announce a release date, and I'm really looking forward to it!

The major work is done, and I'm very happy with the story and characters. I hope to have this in front of you soon, so you can enjoy this conclusion of Spinward Fringe season one. For some of you, this will be the conclusion of the series. I hope it's very satisfying.

RL

[Addendum: For other readers who aren't looking for a conclusive end to the entire series, Broadcast 7 is only the end of the first section of the series. The second section, or 'season' will begin with Broadcast 8, which exists in notes at the moment.]

The Spinward Fringe Podcast Broadcast 22: That First Season Finale

This is the good stuff! Things start off with a Broadcast 7 update Sylvie and I (Randolph Lalonde), talk about finishing Broadcast 7 and some of the notes that typically get passed between a writer and their editor near the end of a project.

We also discuss some of Jacob Valance's journey from Broadcast 1 to Broadcast 7 (without spoiling anything in Broadcast 7). We shed a little light on which characters are largely focused on in this book, and discuss some of the benefits of writing a series, as well as final polishing required to finish Broadcast 7 off.

We take a moment to answer the question; "Do I need to read the Expendable Few to know what's going on in Broadcast 7?" and we continue on to talk about the language and style in that book.

The topic of the discarded draft of Broadcast 7 comes up right before we talk about National Novel Writing Month a little. There are a few nuggets in here, and some insider peeks at what writing this book was like.

The ending of this podcast is rounded out with a short discussion of hype, and what to expect from Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework.

Everything in this podcast is accomplished without dropping spoilers, which is something we're very proud of!
Thank you so much for listening, the new season of The Spinward Fringe Podcast will begin as soon as the release date for Broadcst 7 can be announced, so keep an eye on this feed!

That Geek Podcast Episode 3: The One That Is NOT Two Hours Long.

Sylvie, Stephanie and Randy merrily bounce through our planned topics with a broken track counter that keeps telling Randy they're over an hour into recording.

They start off talking about the shows they're NOT watching, asking questions like:

Are the Networks watching YOU?

How do you find your favourite shows without cable - LEGALLY?

Is Once Upon A Time better than LOST?

Is TV successfully making the transition to the INTERNET?

They eventually dig into the topic of comic book heroes on TV, in the movies and spend equal time on the ones that did well, and the ones that didn't. That leads to a review of the new Spider-Man movie, some nerd rage and coverage of many more flicks leading to to Iron Man, where many things changed.

With Stephanie nearly delerious from sleep deprivation but bolstered on tea, this gets interesting, even a little ranty!

Our theme tune this week is Pinball Spring, provided by Kevin MacLeod, of incompetech.com. We're thankful for his genius!

Spread the word if you like what you hear, geeks are much more fun when they share!

The Spinward Fringe Podcast Broadcast 20: The One With Two Dateless Writers.

Sylvie and I dig into the nitty gritty of our work on The Expendable Few and Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework after I provide a fairly significant update on the progress. There's still no release date, but we're closer.

Next we get into questions from email and from the Facebook Page, where I answer questions about Alice, her role in Broadcast 7, and Sylvie answers questions about her own writing. There's new stuff you've never heard before in this episode, and the Spinward Fringe community played a big part in determining what content ended up in this broadcast.

This week we play Dragonfly by Universal Hall Pass, please check them out if you like what you hear.

That Geek Podcast Episode 2: The Joss Whedon Celebration Part 2 of 2

In the second and final part of the Joss Whedon celebration we look at his more recent work, look at people who have worked with him and done extremely well since and finally, we get excited about what we can expect from our big damn hero.

Here's the list of topics: Firefly, the Whedon-less years on TV, Dollhouse, the writer's strike, Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog, Cabin in the Woods, Avengers, Much Ado About Nothing, Geek and Sundry, Once Upon A Time, and other critical geeky sub-topics.

We answer our very first listener question and it becomes the topic of our next episode: Comic books that have been adapted to the silver screen!

Our music is provided by Steve Everett, who can be found on www.SteveEverett.net. I play West Coast Time, and wonder why he's not massively famous.

The Spinward Fringe Podcast Broadcast 19: That One With The Day In The Life

In this Broadcast, which is solo thanks to some really unfortunate scheduling issues, Randolph Lalonde starts with the Broadcast 7 update. In short, he’s still writing the book.

There are a lot of general questions that have gone unanswered for a while, months, sometimes years, and he tries to tackle them by going through an average day in his life, and he talks about how his routine keeps him on track with writing.

A peek behind the curtain in self publishing is provided as he outlines the release process for Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7: Framework. If you want to know the steps involved in getting a book like this to market, and how long it typically takes, this is the place to get the goods.

The 1,000 member mark was reached on the Spinward Fringe Facebook Page, so he celebrates that by talking about the community and answering fresh questions. Other things mentioned in this podcast include the Spinward Fringe Goodreads Forums, Cthulu, breakfast meat, and generous novel samples.

Our music is provided by Again For The Win this week. We play Nights Like These, and you can find them on www.againforthewin.com

The Spinward Fringe Podcast Broadcast 18: That Final Auto-Bio Episode In 2012

In this broadcast I tie things up by discussing my love of entertaining people. When you consider the fact that I have stage fright, I'm surprised that there's anything to talk about at all before I started publishing novels online. The other two episodes lead here, and I believe it's the best of the autobiographical episodes.

Everything important ties in, and I offer a real update on Broadcast 7, finally talking about why it's taking so long for this book to be written. The end of the episode is dedicated to you, and I take a moment to answer a couple important questions. There's also a lot of music from some great bands, who you'll be able to find using the links below.

Where's My Flying Car? Broadcast 6: The Final Episode!

While this may be the final episode of Where's My Flying Car? it's important to note that we're coming back as That Geek Podcast next week.

In this broadcast we continue with our gaming discussion and wander into dangerous territory: the movie that they inspire. That's right, we discuss game movies and that brings on a bout of nerd rage at one point as we try to find one we really like. It's an episode worth listening to!

Our tune this week is provided by the METTAphors. You can find out where and when their playing as well as discover more of their music by visiting www.themettaphors.com.

The Spinward Fringe Podcast Broadcast 17: That Second Auto-Bio Episode

In this second part of the auto-biographical series, I discuss my biggest hero in life, and how wandering between jobs actually factored into the creation and appearance of Spinward Fringe.

There's a little more humour in this episode thanks to misadventures with co-workers and there are more dreams at the end. There's also a lot more music! Here are the bands featured in this broadcast:

I play a tune from Monster Truck called Love Attack. You can find them on their website: www.ilovemonstertruck.com

Next in the hopper is In The Silence with Ever Closer. You can check them out here: www.inthesilence.net

Finally, playing us out is Cloudkicker with From the Balcony and The Focus back to back. Check them out on bandcamp: http://cloudkicker.bandcamp.com

Where's My Flying Car Broadcast 5: The One With All The Video Games!

If you ever doubted that women play video games, then this episode should provide all the evidence you need to dismiss your skepticism. I am fortunate to sit down with Sylvie and Stephanie, who regale me with tales of their youth with games and what they’re playing now. That screen shot you’re looking at is from Quest For Tires, a game that one of our ladies of gaming loved as a child. I have to admit, I spent a lot of time on a stone unicycle myself when I was knee high to a Mario Brother.

We talk fairly extensively about God of War 3, Guild Wars 2, the Assassin’s Creed Series as well as the movie, MMO’s, how women are portrayed in games, Diablo II and the upcoming update to Baldur’s gate.
We touch on a plethora of other games including World of Warcraft, Tera, Call of Ducy, Age of Conan, Diablo II and III, Dragon Age and Star Wars The Old Republic. The topic of bad video game movies comes up as well, but not for too long, since we mostly manage to stay on target! er, topic. I meant ‘topic’.

The three of us also touch on what we’re watching now, namingly Legend of the Seeker, Doctor Who, Weeds and Hell’s Kitchen. I also spend a minute worshiping Kevin Nealon.

There’s even more in this whopper of an episode, but I’ll let you discover it for yourself. We were going to have a ‘rename our podcast contest’ but found a name right after we finished recording. In one more episode our name will officially change to “That Geek Podcast”

This week we played ‘Polly‘ covered artfully by Walk Off The Earth. Make sure you check their site for tour dates, and to find more music. You can find their tunes wherever great sounds are sold!

The Spinward Fringe Podcast Broadcast 16: That First Biography Episode

This week I'm doing my first solo episode. Instead of doing a standard radio-style show, I'm taking a running leap at a biographical style, so this episode is filled with stories of my early years and advice on writing that I know applies to every writer out there because I've never seen it proven wrong.

This is all wrapped in a theme, and your challenge is to guess it before the 45 minute mark.

I hope you enjoy this experimental episode. I'm looking for feedback, so please leave your comments below or talk about this podcast wherever you normally discuss Spinward Fringe.

The music at the end of this episode is provided by WVM. I play the latest from the new album: The End Is Only The Beginning. The track is called For a Better Tomorrow (feat. Josh Freese). You can find his work anywhere great MP3's are sold including iTunes and Bandcamp.
