Spinward Fringe Broadcast 6: Fragments - eBook Now Available!

At long last, Broadcast 6 has arrived for all eBook readers. I'm excited for people to see this book, especially since it isn't what anyone expected so far.

It took a long time to write, and I appreciate your patience and support. I might not have as many readers as a lot of writers out there, but I can say that I must have some of the best.

Now, down to business. Smashwords is offering Broadcast 6: Fragments in all areas right now. Here are the book's vitals:

I'm fairly proud of this book in particular, especially since I managed to tell more than one story about some of my favourite characters. Some may be short, but several characters go on emotional and physical journeys that move the whole story ahead, and give us a better understanding of them and their surroundings.

I hope you enjoy reading it even more than I enjoyed writing it!

If you happened to stumble on to this post without knowing anything about the series, you can start from the beginning with the free collected trilogy here: Spinward Fringe Broadcast 0: Origins

Update: The iBook reader app issue has been resolved and the spacing throughout this release has been improved. Anyone who has a copy from Smashwords can update. Readers who haven't already bought their copy will automatically get the corrected version. Thanks for reporting the problem!

Great Book! I've read all through all of the story up to now and I can't wait for broadcast 7! Although I must say that I hope that's not the end of the story there either, a rich universe has been created with great possibilities abounding. Any ideas on when we'll be seeing the final chapter of this trilogy? Hopefully we readers won't have to wait years for the next chapter to be revealed!

Since I write full time, and the only thing I'm working on right now is Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7, you certainly won't have to wait for years! :)

This trilogy, especially Broadcast 7, is supposed to tie up a lot of the questions that have been kicking around since the first books came out. As you can probably tell from Broadcast 6, a new foundation is being built so the series can continue after the Rogue Element Trilogy (Broadcasts 5,6,7), so I can guarantee that as long as there are stories left to tell, and people are still reading, I'll keep writing in the Spinward Fringe universe.

Thanks for stopping in, I'm glad you enjoyed the book!

I was wondering, are all the Spinward Fringe books going to be centred around Jake and the Triton/Triton crew? Or are you going to write any in the setting based on a different ship, different characters, and in different part of the galaxy, unrelated to the Triton, at least at first?

Also kinda wondering if you had any plans to release a codex of sorts about the universe you created. Would be nice to read more information about the different races that humanity has encountered. Not to mention the different technologies that have been created.

Anyway, keep up the good work! And if the books keep getting longer, then all the better. (Maybe I won't finish the next one in one night. :P )

Hi Calvin!

I'll try to answer your questions sans-spoilers.

"Are you going to write any in the setting based on a different ship, different characters, and in different part of the galaxy, unrelated to the Triton, at least at first?"

Yes! Some stories will be told from different perspectives. There's a lot of room for other characters with different challenges / problems. The series is already taking a deep breath and getting ready to branch out, you can see signs of it in Broadcast 6.

"Also kinda wondering if you had any plans to release a codex of sorts about the universe you created."

I keep a personal encyclopedia that's updated as each book is written and updated, and I recently considered releasing it on its own but decided against it because commissioning the artwork and polishing the text would be expensive and take a very long time. Time I wouldn't have to write new material. Some day, when I have a development budget, I'll hire someone to do all the grunt work for me so I can keep writing forward.

All hope is not lost! Some time in the future we're going to start including a glossary at the end of each book. We wanted to do it in this book, but ran out of time.

Thanks for stopping in guys!

I'm nearly done with Broadcast 6 and I'm loving the story so far, as I did the others. I did want to let you know that I'm reading it on Stanza on an Ipod Nano and purchased from Smashwords and I've found one fairly irritating thing. The font constantly switches back and forth between a darker, slightly larger font and a smaller, dimmer font. At first I thought you were switching viewpoints or highlighting something or that type of thing but it happens fairly randomly, sometimes every other paragraph, sometimes 2 or 3 paragraphs will be the same font before it switches. It's quite irritating, just thought you should know in case something is messed up with the Smashwords version or there's some kind of bug with your file in Stanza... Keep up the great stories. BTW, I tried your horror book but I just really couldn't seem to get into it, not much into the occult/violence scene, but I did wonder if you've ever considered writing any non-scifi fiction (thriller, mystery, etc.) Also, I may have missed it on your site but would you mind mention some of the authors you like to read?

I checked the book again in HTML, online, and with Stanza (using a Mac and on my iPhone), but didn't find any problems. Sadly I don't have a nano to test it on.

I have a fantasy novel I'll be finishing early next year, and it looks like I'll be developing Dark Arts into something more full featured closer to the end of 2011.

As far as thriller / mystery genres, I've read many books in those categories, but will most likely try and incorporate the finer points of those styles into Spinward Fringe. Mystery, thriller, even legal intrigue genres fit very well into Science Fiction, in fact SciFi would be pretty boring without those twists.

As far as my reading list is concerned, well, the last book I read was War, by Sebastian Junger. I'm half way through The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet and next up will be Untamed Time by Susan Plunkett. I read every genre in fiction, and several non-fiction genres. My favourite authors are mostly people I know, like Elizabeth C Mock who just put out a fantastic book I got to preview.

When I first started writing long fiction about 18 years ago, I read a lot of Tom Robbins, Clive Barker, Khalil Gibran and second hand university history books. As a kid I loved going through really old encyclopedias (our library had a set from the 40's), and find things that were incorrect using the newest set, which wasn't really that new. Most of the other kids were busy watching Mary Poppins, or listening to an adult read to them. That lasted until I discovered the Occult section. Mom and Dad didn't send me back to the library on Sundays anymore after that...

These days I walk into bookstores and let the clerks pick a book from 3 random genres. It helps that I can go through an average book in an afternoon.

Right, enough procrastination! Back to work on Broadcast 7.

Hi,

I'm reading your books via the Kindle - got to say I'm impressed and thoroughly hooked, however Spinward Fringe Broadcast 6: Fragments seems to no longer be listed on Amazon.co.uk?

Any idea why?

Thank you for taking the time to ask. The current blog post goes into what's going on, and points to a reliable provider for the Kindle version.
