I know what you mean by the Ender's game books. I read the whole of both series, but IMNSHO they drag at times.
I'd note that one SF novel that I very much liked was Tobias Buckell's Crystal Rain, a "marooned on an alien world" kind of book ... and then was pleasantly surprised to find it opening up into something more like Space Opera in its sequels.
