This is a larger book than I anticipated. My initial goal was to plan and write a book that came in at around 100,000 words in approximately 30 days.
While I know I can still make the word count goal, I am sure that once I reach it the book will not be complete. That means there will be no way for me to publish this novel on December 21, 2015.
I need time to write a novel that will probably come in at 150,000 words minimum. This is an important book in this story, so I'd also like to slow down a little and take the time to do more planning so the final story is more refined and enjoyable.
Another important factor in all this is editing. The last book went out without a final check because it was rushed out, so there are errors that will be corrected this December or sooner. Thankfully Broadcast 9 is a much loved volume in the series, but it still deserved a little more time. I don't want the same thing to happen with Broadcast 10, so giving myself some more time to do editing is really important. Backtracking, correcting errors in previous books slows work on new books and other projects down.
I'll be honest, I really wanted Broadcast 10 out right before or right after the new Star Wars movie, but rushing things will only result in an inferior work, so that's not going to happen.
So, what kind of delay are we looking at?
I expect to have a very good, longer version of Broadcast 10: Freeground out on January 28, 2016.
The good news is that work on Broadcast 11: Revolution will already be underway by the time Spinward Fringe Broadcast 10: Freeground is out, and both books will be much longer than originally planned. Both books tell the story of our favourite characters in a time of absolute war, and will offer the kind of stories I've been looking forward to telling for years.
I am sorry that things are going to be delayed, but the results will be so much better this way

You keep writing, we'll keep reading. I guess your readers can manage to wait another month...
What hardkillinpete said!
Waiting as log as it takes hooked line and sinker!!
Can't think of a better reason to delay the release of SF-B10.
Will look forward to reading it.
You write I'll wait..
No worries :)Good things come to those who wait.
Good things come to those who wait. No worries. :)
It Won't Be a Problem. If it will result in a longer & Better story I can wait.
As the Irish say,"When God made time, he made lots of it."
When you're ready, we will all be ready, too.
If you keep pumping out this great story, we will keep buying them. Don't worry about the delay, for me I will have many other books to read. Just wish I could find great ones like you write!
However long it takes is fine! Another favorite author of mine J.A. does not apologize for the 8 years or more between her novels! A great story needs to take as long as it takes to be told! For you, Randy, we will wait and be the better for it!
I am sure most of your fans are like myself and will gladly wait knowing there will be that much more of an interesting story to come. Keep up the good work, you have many devoted fans.
Builds the excitement!
Hello Mr Lalonde
My good Sir, you take your time. It's a matter of quality not quantity and if anybody thinks otherwise, I will quote you " Suck it up butter cup " :-)
On a different note, I did notice a few errors but you have already been self critical in regards to them so not a big issue there.
With BC 9 I really enjoyed the transition of the father and the daughter (don't want to mention too much details for obvious reasons) but the book as a whole is just phenomenal. The details and intricacies of every character are superb. You just carry on writing and we as loyal readers will carry on reading, it doesn't matter how long the wiat because in the end it's worth it. Good luck to you on your future endeavours. I hope and pray that you keep on delivering outstanding SciFi novels.
Kind regards
Rehan
Doesn't matter how long you take. Whenever you finish it, we will be here waiting to read it.
well shoot. i guess either way is great. a month extra for an extra 50k words worth of story? sound like a good deal to me.
Mr. Lalonde, indeed take your time seeking the "perfect 10." But your fans beg you not to turn into the space operatic version of George R.R. Martin!
As much as I'm gutted by the delay, the anticipation will build and I know I'll enjoy it more. If you could get it out for the 23rd of January, my birthday, that would be awesome!!
